Do you long for the salty air, golden sands, and cosy seaside towns of yesteryear? Then join me on a journey to Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk, a hidden gem on the English coast. As a 60-something myself, I’m thrilled to share the walking trails, beaches, harbour delights, and flavours that make this spot particularly special for adventurers our age.
Tucked away on the beautiful North Norfolk coast, Wells-next-the-Sea offers a chance to step back in time. Its winding streets and quaint cottages exude old-world charm. Locals sip ale in centuries-old pubs full of maritime history. And colourful fishing boats chug in and out of the harbour as they have for generations. Tranquil and nostalgic, this seaside escape lets you enjoy the simpler pleasures in life.
Drink in Sweeping Views on the Norfolk Coast Path
Lace up those walking shoes because Wells-next-the-Sea serves up some spectacular rambles along the Norfolk Coast Path. This long-distance trail runs for 84km, with one of the most scenic sections found between Wells and Holkham.
As you meander along the coast, sweeping views unfold across salt marshes and dunes. Breath in the briny air as you watch oystercatchers and avocets search for molluscs and worms exposed by the receding tide. The call of a curlew may echo in your ears. Its evocative cry always brings me back to childhood beach holidays.
If you’re up for a longer, 9-mile round trip, head west from Wells-next-the-Sea to Holkham National Nature Reserve and back again. Built in 1764, Holkham Hall makes a fine stop for refreshments before looping round its lake on your return. Just save some energy for all of Wells’ other attractions!
Sink Your Toes into Wells Beach’s Golden Sands
The crown jewel of the town awaits in the form of Wells Beach, just a short stroll from the harbour and town centre. Here, whispering dunes give way to sandy expanses sprinkled with seashells and smoothed by gentle waves. I could spend hours beachcombing and gazing out at the sea, watching boats glide by as they enter Wells Harbour.
If you fancy a brisk seaside walk, the beach stretches for miles towards Holkham, perfect for clearing your head. Or simply claim your patch of sand, crack open a book, and relax beneath the big Norfolk skies. Don’t forget to treat yourself to fish and chips or some candy floss from the little kiosks lining the beach!
Soak in the Sights and Sounds of Wells Harbour
No visit to Wells is complete without an amble around its historic harbour, the beating heart of this coastal spot. Watch fishermen unload their catches of crabs, lobsters and mussels that will soon find their way onto dinner plates at seafront restaurants. The sight of these timeworn boats, painted in sherbet hues, never fails to lift my spirits.
At low tide, you can even walk out along the harbour channel to gaze back at the town, the water shimmering at its edges. Keep your eyes peeled for wading birds too. Herons often stand sentinel, spear fishing for supper as the boats come in.
If you’re feeling brave, try your hand at crabbing from the quayside. Lower little bait cages into the harbour’s waters to nab a few feisty crustaceans. Just be sure to return them gently to enjoy their freedom afterwards!
Indulge in Local Seafood and Seaside Nostalgia
Of course, what’s a trip to the English seaside without some good old-fashioned fish and chips? In Wells, you’re truly spoilt for choice when it comes to award-winning chippies and ice cream parlours.
For the best views in town, grab some takeaway and head to the atmospheric Globe Inn. Perched right on the quay, this 14th century pub oozes maritime charm. Tuck into oak-smoked haddock as fishing boats drift lazily by. Or sample local cromer crab and sip Norfolk ale in the shelter of its timber-framed interior.
However you choose to refuel, Wells-next-the-Sea offers a feast for the senses, with nostalgic seaside spirit to spare. Its tranquil pace lets you create special memories to cherish for years to come.
Fish and chips, personally for me are a must when I visit Wells next the Sea, and I love French's on the front.
